August 26, 2007 - The CBSA held men's and women's amateur 9-Ball events for the first time this year, attracting 63 players in both events. Both of these tournaments ran from August 20th to the 22nd.

In the Women's event Quebec's Tammy Rubin was undefeated. After having a bye in the first round, Rubin finished the same way she started, defeating Ontario's Susie Wipper. Wipper won 5 matches in the lower bracket to have her rematch but was unable to get past Rubin.

Manitoba's Berry McLean won both sides of the board in the men's amateur. After losing to Jay Goyer (ON) in the hot seat round, Berry defeated Pierre Normand (QC) in the lower bracket final.  He then overtook Goyer in his rematch to win the event.

All other 9-Ball divisions completed today. Four games is all that separated all three finals.  Nova Scotia's Everette Paul was first to the to the hot seat but lost to Marc Bucais (ON) 11-9 in the junior final. In a similar situation Jason Klatt (MB) was unseated by Edwin Montal (AB) 15-14 in the open division and Alberta's Joanne Ashton was undefeated edging out Rachael Abbink (ON) 11-10 in the women's final.

The most notable player to find himself in the lower bracket after the first round of the Open division was Quebec's  Danny Hewitt.  He was one of the pre-tournament favourites and opponent Tyler Edey made  it a long trip for him.  Neither player factored into the tournament despite their records.

Hewitt earned a spot here by way of his 2nd place finish in the Canadian 9-Ball tour standings. First place tour finisher Edwin Montal had a first round bye.

Other notables having first round losses were 2006 Champion Brady Gollan, 2005 finalist Nicholas Guimond, Erik Hjorliefson, Luc Salvas and Ron Wiseman. Wiseman was a victim of 2004 Champion Alain Martel.

Both Jeff Kennedy and Chris Dempsey from New Brunswick  made it to the fourth round but petered out in the lower bracket.

The most significant charge in the lower bracket came from Francis Crevier (QC), defeating Tyler Edey, Chris Dempsey, Alain Martel and John Morra before losing to Edwin Montal in the round just before the lower bracket final. No doubt you will hear more of him in this year's Canadian 9-Ball Tour with this list under his belt.
