Ottawa is home to the Canadian Snooker Championship.

Aug 16, 2007 - The Canadian Snooker Championship gets underway this morning at the Super Ex in Ottawa. This will be home to the Canadian Championships for the next eleven days featuring snooker and 9-Ball.

The Snooker Championship was last held in Ottawa 26 years ago with Bob Chaperon winning. In 1980, the previous year, BC's Jim Bear won the championship. This was his ticket to being a finalist in the World Amateur Championship.

The winner of this years event will earn a spot in this year's IBSF World Amateur Snooker Championship.

There were four last minute changes but the field remains at thirty-five. With eight groups it will make it difficult for some players to advance to the elimination round as only two will advance from each group. In the past few years there were two wild cards making up for the one group shortfall.

The groups are seeded based on past championship performances. Alain Robidoux, last year's winner will be favoured to win his group. I would probably include Tom Finstad, Don Chomiski, Floyd Ziegler, Fern Loyer and Kirk Clouthier to win or do no worse than second in their groups. Kirk's group is probably the most difficult and I would think that Andre Roy will have a much better result than his 4th ranked position would indicate.
