Aug 22, 2008 - The Canadian Championship Open and Women's 9-Ball got underway Thursday. The women's division has played down to the last four in the upper bracket. Cathy Metzinger, Naomi Williams, Maureen Seto and Brittany Bryant are undefeated to the semis.
The lower bracket completed three rounds today and will continue on Saturday with Denise Belanger, Joanne Ashton, Grace Nakamura and Susie Wipper squaring off in the 5th round.
Tyler Edey exited the open today at the hands of Ryan Solleveld. He lost to Louis Fazekas in the upper bracket second round. This will be a disappointing finish for Edey who won the last event of the season in the Canadian 9-Ball tour at this club. Edey doesn't come away from these championships empty handed as he was runner-up in the open 8-ball division. Also exiting on day two were Jeff Kennedy, Chris Orme and Kirk Stevens.
Staying in the running in the upper bracket as long as possible will be a key factor in the outcome of this tournament. Mario Morra, Andrew Aupin, Shannon Ducharme and Alain Martel lead the open division to the semis.
Ronnie Wiseman has come the furthest distance to round 5 in the lower bracket winning two rounds. The competition is strong and it will take a great deal of effort for the remaining players that now find themselves in the lower bracket, to win the next five or six rounds required to win that side of the board.
The draw for Junior 9-Ball was made this evening and it will get underway on Saturday also. Among the players in the junior competition are last years winner Marc Bucais, BC's Cory Pointon who made it to the lower bracket semi-final in 2006 and Brittany Bryant who is making her presence felt in the Women's 8-Ball and 9-Ball events.
All brackets are current to Friday's matches.
