Robidoux captures his 5th Hafa Invitational.
October 25, 2009
Now in it's ninth year, the Hafa Invitational got underway on the 16th with defending champ Floyd Ziegler defeating Pat McCarthy by a 5-2 margin. McCarthy recorded a 102 in this match. Eriks Malderis also posted a 102 in his 5-3 loss to Lester Mianskum.
Play continued through the first weekend with Kirk Clouthier, Fern Loyer and Phil Snache advancing from Saturday's matches and Odie Willet, Lester Mianskum and John Everekian advancing from Sunday's matches.
The quarter-finals were played throughout the week with Floyd Ziegler, John Everekian, Alain Robidoux and Phil Snache advancing to the semis.
On Saturday, both semi-finals went to a decider with John Everekian and Alain Robidoux advancing.
Everekian had wins over Jeff Kennedy and Lester Mianskum to reach the semis. Alain Robidoux had breaks of 124, 79 and 80 en route to a 5 nil win over Jeff Boucher on Wednesday evening and followed up with another 5 nil win over Kirk Clouthier on Thursday to reach the semis.
John Everekian had a 113 break today, missing the brown for a possible 135. It would be the only frame he won as Alain Robidoux proved to be too tough, taking advantage of every missed opportunity. Alain won the 9th Hafa Invitational by a 5-1 margin.
The highest break of the tournament was a 124 made by Alain Robidoux and John Everekian's 113 was the highest amateur break. Honorable mention goes to Eriks Malderis and Pat McCarthy who shared a 102.
This was the most diverse field assembled for the invitational. New Brunswick was represented by Jeff Kennedy, Alberta by Brad Grierson, Northern Ontario by Fern Loyer and Lester Mianskum, Eastern Ontario by Kirk Clouthier, and the balance of the players coming from Southern Ontario.
Arguably the best snooker player in Canada today, Quebec's Alain Robidoux has now recorded his 5th Hafa Invitational title.
